I'm glad I finally get to come and enjoy the special exclusive vegetal goodness. Matcha Fest is around for a 3rd year, this time in SoMa StrEat Food Park instead of Mission Bay Blvd. Macaroons, milk tea bobas, rice crispy treats, all for us matcha lovers to enjoy. If you're in a mood for matcha-y food and drink but you're seeking for what's exclusive, be sure to stop by at Matcha Fest if it greens around!
The creators of this festival are geniuses! I love events that bring the community together. Great food. Great vibes. Great use of space. And, most importantly, matcha matcha everything!!! I only wished that there was more entertainment. It was also difficult to find parking, but hey, it's SF. Overall, loved it!
MATCHA LOVERS UNITE! The first year of Matcha Fest was quite the success! I got 4pm tickets and was promptly welcomed in by Jules and the Matcha SF team! Everyone was so nice! While it was hottttt, everyone enjoyed themselves. Part of the soccer field was blocked off for Matcha Fest, but you could wander into the other side of Spark Social SF where there's a lot of food trucks and stands. I'm still on a sugar high from all the lovely matcha desserts but wanted to try everything in sight! I loved the mochi muffin from Third Culture Bakery, the matcha alfajor from Zuly, and any drink from Asha is amazing. I wish there were more savories besides Spark Social, but maybe a lot of things sold out too. There was also cornhole, photo booth, and lots of goodies! Thanks for all the hard work, Matcha SF team! I can't wait for round two!
This is the inaugural year and it is sold out! Glad I got my tickets ahead of time! It was a warm and sunny Sunday and the Matcha Fest area is pretty much in full sun. I wish they had tables and umbrellas in the middle area. There was certainly plenty of room for it. Make sure to bring a hat and sunglasses if you want the sun out of your face. Strawberry Matcha Latte Boba from Boba Guys, Cherry Matcha Ice Cream from Scoopzilla, Matcha Toffee from McFaddy Candy, Matcha Popcorn with White Chocolate from Peter's Kettle Corn, and Black Vanilla Doughnuts with White Chocolate Matcha Sauce from Hookt Doughnuts were the things we tried! My favorites were doughnuts, Boba and Toffee! The lines weren't too bad except for Churn Urban Creamery! We got there early so that helped. Too many vendors selling the same things like ice cream and drinks. So many things Matcha but we got full real fast. I took my jar of toffee and bag of popcorn home. Come hungry and eat Matcha!
I had so much fun at the first annual SF Matcha Fest! We arrived around 11:30am, got our tickets scanned, and entered the soccer field where all of the Matcha vendors were. They had everything from Matcha doughnuts to Matcha ice cream (of course) to Matcha Fresco. All of the Matcha food was delicious. The line was long for the Churn Urban Creamery but the staff started handing out free samples of strawberry ice cream because it was so hot out! The weather said it'd be about 75 degrees, but it definitely got up to around 85, especially with the lack of shade in the event center. The Matcha Fresco from Asha Teahouse definitely helped to keep us cool. My friends and I purchased the tank tops and t-shirts they were selling and even got to meet the maker of Matcha Fest, Jules! She was incredibly sweet and friendly, and seemed so genuinely excited to see the turnout and how much fun everyone was having. Her team was awesome and helped us take so many fun group photos and they had a free photo booth and Matcha phrase signs to hold up. Cute idea! Overall, besides how hot the weather was, we all had a memorable time at the SF Matcha Fest 2017, and we are already excited for the next one so we can try the vendors we didn't get to this time! Thank you to Jules and her team for hosting such an awesome event. Working one of their booths sounds and looks like so much fun, you can tell they are passionate about all things Matcha! Woohoo!
I'm so glad my friend caught onto the event early on and got us tickets! This event was awesome and kudos to all the booths and staff. Everyone was really hanging in there despite the heat! First off, gotta say, the check in process just went really smoothly. It was straight forward and instinctive, and this is just really key to any event. Especially new ones. Hooray for technology! Secondly, LOVE the variety. Thank you to all the vendors who came out and the multitudes that used actual matcha (saw many using chasen and chawan to whisk, which was just really exciting). The resulting myriad of flavors and combos of matcha at different intensities just really makes it feel like a proper appreciation celebration. In terms of purely matcha items, I counted 3 or 4 places that sold ice cream of some sort, lost count of how many places sold drinks (lattes, milk tea, lemonade, hot chocolate, etc.), matcha drizzled popcorn, cotton candy, cookie dough, chunuts (churro-donuts), cream puffs, black vanilla doughnuts drizzled with matcha confections, cookies, rice krispies, oreos, tiramisu, and (of course) tea. And that was just in the field. The usual SF food truck area seems to have also joined in on the celebration. There was matcha ice cream crepes, matcha drinks, and so forth mixed in with the usual items. Everyone was very friendly and having a good time, with plenty of people willing to share the shaded part of a table with newcomers. The heat in generally was something everyone noticed. The prediction for the weather had been in the mid-70s, but when I checked during around 1 PM during the fest, reports had San Francisco weather fluctuating around 88 to 92 F. The fact that I wore jeans and bought a vest for me JUST IN CASE backfired on me ROYALLY. I might very well have been one of those tiny doughnuts in the petite fryer because I was toasted crispy. Completely forgot about sunscreen. The matcha craze wasn't just at SF Social either. See, my friend wanted to find someplace to sit down with air conditioning. A cafe or the like. The closest place was a Boba Guys, so we decided to forgo getting a matcha milk tea at their stand in the field since we were going to their shop anyways. We...got lost. I had aimed for us to go to the closest Boba Guys, but my friend ended up guiding us to the Boba Guys on 19th instead. And GEEZ, the LINE was out the door, up along the wall, and across some of the nearby apartment entrances. In a little alcove where the line was passing, I saw a disposable cup with dredges of ice cream from Churn Urban Creamery. Apparently, we weren't the only ones who thought to come out this way. A guy passing by laughed and called us all crazy. The one detractor to me was that the set up of the activities in the middle of the field was a bit late? Actually, I'm not sure what if the middle was even for activities. There was one red tent set up randomly in the middle and SO MANY people were hiding under the shadow it cast. Hoola hoops came out later and were mostly scattered randomly. Stacks of red chairs came out even later (around 2-ish?). It's not so much of a detractor as it is that I think they could really do something with all that space next year. This year, most people were either braving the sun or look to hide in the shade. But who knows, maybe they'll be even MORE booths and treats next year and there will have to be rows down the middle to fit all the merchants. Either way, hoping to attend next year as well! XD
